Day 01 : Departing from Quito
Leaving Quito in private transport, we travel south along the famous Avenue of the Volcanoes, where the Andean landscape unfolds in a dramatic mix of valleys, peaks, and farmlands.
A brief stop in Machachi, a picturesque highland town, allows us to acclimatize and enjoy the first views of Cotopaxi’s snow-covered cone — one of the world’s most iconic active volcanoes.
Entering Cotopaxi National Park, located at 5,897 meters (19,347 ft) above sea level, we find ourselves surrounded by a pristine ecosystem of rugged plains, wild horses, and native flora. The impressive scenery provides endless photo opportunities and a true sense of high-altitude adventure.
Within the park, visitors can choose between two memorable experiences: Option 1: Enjoy a Chagra-style horseback ride (approx. 2 hours), crossing trails formed by ancient lava flows and volcanic rocks while soaking in panoramic views of Cotopaxi.
Option 2: Hike to the José Rivas Refuge (4,864 meters / 15,748 ft), an accessible ascent that offers incredible views of the volcano’s slopes and glaciers — no climbing experience required.
After exploring the area, we visit the Interpretation Center, where informative exhibits reveal fascinating details about Cotopaxi’s geology, wildlife, and the historic “Volcano Route” of Ecuador.
Following a rewarding day surrounded by majestic scenery and crisp mountain air, we begin our private return to Quito, arriving in the late afternoon or evening.
