Day 01 : Departing from Quito
As we depart from Quito, the journey along the Avenue of the Volcanoes offers a magnificent introduction to Ecuador’s highlands. You’ll pass through rolling valleys, traditional Andean villages, and see snow-capped peaks rising above the clouds — the perfect opportunity for spectacular photos.
Arriving at the Chimborazo Fauna Production Reserve, we enter a protected ecosystem home to vicuñas, llamas, and alpacas. The dramatic landscapes here offer a true sense of Andean wilderness, framed by the majestic Chimborazo Volcano, Ecuador’s highest peak at 6,263 meters (20,548 ft).
We first reach the Hermanos Carrel Refuge at 4,800 meters (15,748 ft). For those who wish, and weather permitting, a short hike takes us up to the Whymper Refuge at 5,042 meters (16,509 ft). From this altitude, the views of the mountain and surrounding highlands are simply breathtaking.
A small glacial lagoon near the Whymper Refuge, Condor Cocha offers a peaceful setting surrounded by pure mountain silence. This is an ideal moment to connect with nature and feel the tranquility of the Andes.
After descending, we head to Riobamba, known as the “Sultan of the Andes.” You’ll have free time to enjoy lunch at a local restaurant (not included) and stroll through the historic center or local markets if time allows.
Our final stop is in Guano, a small town famous for its mummified friar, discovered inside the ruins of an old church. The Guano Mummy Museum displays this fascinating piece of history, along with local handicrafts and cultural artifacts that tell the story of the region.
After a day filled with nature, culture, and incredible Andean views, we begin our private return to Quito, arriving in the late afternoon or evening.
